Voodoo Tavern and PoBoys: Reviews & Ratings
I'll add to the list of reviews that the Dirty Shrimp Po Boy is a must. Also, I enjoyed the Ghost Margarita. The atmosphere is chill, which I think is a good thing if you are looking for a break from Bourbon Street.
Ordered and split the roast beef poboy fully dressed with the Cajun jambalaya meat pies and dessert. Let me tell you if the changed the bread to gambinos French bread or even the other big name bread here they could easily have the title for best roast beef poboy in the city. Roll of paper towels brought out with the meal so I knew right away I was in for a treat! The jambalaya is traditional Cajun not creole. And it was phenomenal. Personally the meat pies were not for me. But New Orleans locals and visitors should add this place to the top of their lists for a roast beef poboy and Jambalaya. As a native who moved away and just comes back to visit I can but my personal guarantee as a chef and restaurant owner this is the place to come. Looks like fair pricing on alcohol as well. Add this hidden gem to your list.
Make the trip. You won’t regret it! Also take the ghost tour they offer and order a Hurricane drink. The owner Mario is legit! Lot of fun!
We got the Dirty Shrimp, Original Poorboy, and Denris fries - all insane. The roast beef is sooooo juicy and flavorful. Definitely happy we came before our flight.
The service here was 10/10. The staff went above and beyond for our group. The cocktails were delicious and the food was incredible. This is one of the best Shrimp Po Boys I have ever had. Many in our group loved the Roast Beef mix as well. Would definitely recommend if in the area!
I am so glad that we stopped in here! Voodoo Tavern is small but mighty! There's roughly half a dozen pub-style tables and limited bar seating. However, they sure do hit it out of the park with their customer service and delicious food. We weren't sure what to expect, but ended up with some of the best burgers and poboys we've had anywhere - juicy and boasting with flavor! Definitely recommend visiting.
We stumbled in here while walking around and ordered a cup of jambalaya and a shrimp po boy. The jambalaya was tasty, but the po boy was the STAR OF THE SHOW! The shrimp came out so incredibly crispy without being greasy, and was so moist and delicious under the fry. The sandwich was loaded up and the bread was soft and the perfect vessel for all that delicious shrimp ! Plus the staff were incredibly friendly and kind. We will definitely be back!
I had such a great experience here! The food is delicious, super fresh, and full of flavor. This place is well-known for its amazing Popoy, and it definitely lived up to the hype. Mario and his staff are incredibly friendly and professional, they make you feel welcomed from the moment you walk in. I also highly recommend trying their drinks; they’re refreshing, well-balanced, and a perfect match with the food. Overall, an excellent spot with great vibes, great service, and food that never disappoints!

Nestled in the heart of New Orleans at 1140 Decatur Street, Voodoo Tavern and PoBoys stands out as a true culinary gem for anyone seeking an authentic taste of the city’s legendary Po Boy tradition. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance—relaxed and inviting, offering a welcome respite from the frenzy of nearby Bourbon Street. It’s a place where both locals and visitors can savor carefully crafted dishes that pay homage to classic Cajun and Creole flavors without the pretense.
The star of the menu unquestionably is their Dirty Shrimp Po Boy, a dish repeatedly praised for its juicy, flavorful shrimp, perfectly fried and tucked inside fresh, sturdy French bread that holds up beautifully against the flavorful fillings. Equally compelling is their roast beef Po Boy, served “fully dressed” with all the traditional fixings. The bread here—though slightly debated among purists—serves as a solid foundation for the rich, tender beef that practically melts in your mouth. It’s a sandwich that commands attention and respect, especially when paired with their traditional Cajun jambalaya, which delivers a hearty, smoky depth far from the sweeter Creole style, staying true to New Orleans’ culinary roots.
Beyond the sandwiches, the tavern treats you to unique regional specialties like Cajun jambalaya meat pies—an adventurous choice that might not suit every palate but is a testament to the kitchen's commitment to authentic, bold flavors. Their side offerings, such as Denris fries, provide just the right crunch and seasoning to complement the main dishes.
Cocktails at Voodoo Tavern and PoBoys deserve mention in their own right. The Ghost Margarita and classic Hurricane are standout drinks that elevate the dining experience, crafted with care and perfectly balanced to refresh after a day’s exploration. Add to that the warm, attentive service from the staff, and you have a spot that goes beyond food—a true culinary experience wrapped in the vibrant culture of New Orleans.
For those who appreciate both tradition and a hint of modern flair, Voodoo Tavern and PoBoys is a destination to savor. Whether it’s a quick bite before a flight or a leisurely meal paired with one of their ghost tours, this hidden gem promises an unforgettable taste of the city’s best soul food and spirits.
